2025 Federal Budget Media Release: Economic Red Flags Ahead
Australia’s Economy: Don’t Ignore the Red Flags
The Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) has issued a serious warning about Australia’s economy, and it’s something we can’t afford to brush off. In their recent media release, IPA CEO Professor Andrew Conway said, “Australia is sleepwalking into an economic wasteland,” and it’s time to wake up.
Global organizations have been raising the alarm, but not enough is being done. Let’s look at the key issues and why they matter for all of us.
1. Small Businesses Are Struggling
Small businesses are a huge part of Australia’s economy, but their impact is shrinking. In 2006, they contributed 40% to GDP. Now, it’s down to just 33%. Even their role in job creation has dropped, from 53% to 42%. When small businesses struggle, the whole economy feels it.
2. Rising Debt Levels
Australia’s debt is growing at a scary pace. Back in 2004, our debt was just 15.2% of GDP. Today, it’s skyrocketed to 57.9%. No other major economy has seen debt increase this fast. If we don’t get it under control, it could lead to serious problems down the line.
3. A Lack of Innovation
Innovation drives progress and raises living standards. But recent Federal Budgets haven’t done enough to encourage new ideas and advancements. Without innovation, Australia risks falling behind.
4. Outdated Tax and Super Systems
Australia’s tax and superannuation systems are outdated and hurting growth. With 67% of government revenue coming from taxes, we need smarter, more efficient systems to keep the economy moving.
5. Population Growth Isn’t the Solution
For years, Australia has relied on immigration to boost economic growth. But this is just a short-term fix. We need a long-term plan to grow the economy sustainably.
6. Wages Are Falling Behind
Real wages in Australia are 4.8% lower than they were before the pandemic. Other countries have recovered, but we’re still struggling. This is making life harder for many Australians and worsening the cost-of-living crisis.
Time for Action
The IPA is calling for real reforms that encourage business investment, support startups, and drive innovation. Without bold action, these trends could drag the economy down even further.
It’s time to stop ignoring the red flags and start building a stronger, more resilient economy – before it’s too late.
